Lisa Jackson, Administrator
Environmental Protection Agency
Washington, D.C. 20460

Dear Ms. Jackson,

Thank you and President Obama for your commitment to clean water.

I hope you will pay particular attention to clean up of the Chesapeake Bay, an economic engine for the mid-Atlantic region.   Clean Water Act impairments abound in the watershed.  In Stafford County Virginia’s tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay, nineteen TMDL streams are awaiting cleanup.  Look at this picture of Potomac, Accokeek, and Aquia Creeks tidal waters in Stafford just before that flow reaches the Potomac River after a rain storm.

The science for cleanup is known.  But voluntary action by states is not enough; Federal intervention with penalties for non-compliance must be put in place.

I urge you to act before pulling the Bay back from the brink of economic and environmental disaster becomes impossible.  Please follow law and enforce the Clean Water Act.

Congratulations on your appointment and thank you in advance for all you will do the environment.

Sincerely,

Patricia Kurpiel
